History Behind the Legend of the Vampire

KOMPAS.com – Everywhere appeared vampires. This past week, the latest film from the series Twilight Saga, which is the second part of the four, entitled New Moon, started playing in Jakarta. The film has been breaking records with box office scooped more than 70 million U.S. dollars and will likely become the largest profit in the history of the opening.  Twilight Saga series actually was not the first vampire story that was appointed to the big screen. Over the decades been a lot of famous movies with the theme of vampires. The public thirst for vampire seemed like a blood thirsty vampire in the legend itself. The contemporary fiction writers who have raised the theme of vampires, like Stephenie Meyer (Twilight Saga), Anne Rice (Interview with the Vampire), and Stephen King (Salem’s Lot), a “mine” the legend that endless to be dug. But actually what we now form a view about vampires? The answer is in the gray area around the myth and the truth.
Spearing victim
Some sources mistakenly trace the origins of vampires in a Romanian prince, Vlad Tepes (1431-1476), who fought for independence from the Ottoman Empire. Although practically do so brutal and sadistic (ie he kills enemies by jabbing the spears little by little, pull out their entrails, cut up their bodies, burning them, and others), these things are common during the war in time.  The techniques used by the same Catholic Church and other rulers in the Middle Ages to torture and kill the enemy.  Bram Stoker (Dracula) also have included aspects of Vlad Tepes Dracula into a character in his work. Although Tepes was also affecting the image of the vampire fiction today, the roots of real vampires have a different origin. In terms of culture, the vampire is a phenomenon that appears in the entire world. According to Paul Barber anthropology expert who is the author of the Vampire, Burial, and Death (vampires, funerals, and death), almost all cultures have stories similar local version of the vampire legend, and it “has a surprising resemblance to the European vampire,” he said . Belief in vampires originated from superstition and false assumptions about the decay after death.  Note the first discovery of vampires spread in Europe in the Middle Ages. The stories all follow the same pattern: some bad luck befall a person, a family, or a city, perhaps because the famine that damage crops, or the spread of epidemics. At that time, science can not explain the weather patterns and the germ theory. So whatever bad luck not clear why be blamed on vampires. Vampires are easy answers to explain why bad things always happen to good people.
Dead but not yet decayed
The villagers combine their belief that there is a curse that was going on between them and their fear of death and the dead. That way, they concluded that perhaps the people who had been buried was responsible because they had risen from the grave to do evil. Therefore, excavated tombs, and the villagers are often shocked by the normal process of decay, and thought it was a supernatural phenomenon. For example, although people usually assume that the body would decompose quickly, when the coffin shut and buried in the winter, then the decay can be delayed several weeks or even months. Decay can cause intestinal Bloat is pushing blood into the mouth so that the body just looks like sucking blood. This process is well understood by doctors and funeral today. However, in medieval Europe, all this is a sign that can not be denied that real vampires and haunt them. Although vampire “really” had not existed, their legends continue to captivate the world. It seems, either science or silver milestone not impervious to kill the vampire myth.
